The Free Academy of Visual Art (1955-1976)

From 1955 to his death, Nol is teaching at The Free Academy of Visual Art. The Academy is founded in 1947 by painter Livinus van der Bundt, later followed by George Lampe.

The Free Academy of Visual Art is a place of ‘free choice, free will, and of free personality development’. To everyone, both professionals as amateurs, the opportunity is given to develop the creative ability.

Lampe puts the underlying thought in words as: ‘A sharp separation between professionals and amateurs cannot be made. There are Sunday painters and painters who can only paint on Sundays. Artists cannot be made.

Nols thoughts agree on this. People talk about Nol being a teacher as a unique coach who was ‘a born authority, because he watched carefully for not being an authority’.

More then twenty years Nol has taught at The Free Academy of Visual Art.
The fact that he was an inspiring and popular teacher, becomes clear when his students organize an exhibition after his death in 1976, showing Nol’s and their own work in memory of their beloved  teacher.
